East/West sure, but what about West/East May 3, 2017

I find the story about former UK ambassador to Ireland Ivor Roberts taking out Irish citizenship intriguing. Because it perhaps underscores a dynamic that is sometimes forgotten. Yes, there are many links on the part of Irish people with England and Britain, but similarly there are links of English people with Ireland, and it is fascinating to see those links being oddly reinforced, albeit in the most unlikely way (at least hitherto) possible in relation to Brexit.

Roberts may couch his decision in utilitarian needs, but it takes little to discover that his links with Ireland are considerable. But it is fascinating to see movement in a direction towards Ireland (and through that towards Europe, though not necessarily towards the EU as an institution as such).

Isn’t Roberts a known (ex-) British spook? I have to say, that ‘utilitarian’ (opportunist) applications of this nature really annoy me, as a a genuine citizen.
