Sunday Independent Stupid Statement of the Week May 7, 2017

With the French Republic in danger in today’s election, the Sindo offers us this

Feminists all over the world clamour that “more women’s voices must be heard”. More women’s voices in science, on business boards, in academia, in the media, and, above all, in politics. However, no feminists I can trace have praised the French Presidential candidate Marine le Pen as representing an advance for women’s voices in politics. As Marion Anne Perrine le Pen has led the National Front party, and thus “the extreme far right”, she is never seen as a role-model for women and she is not supported by feminist groups.
There’s an element of sectarianism here: when feminists say there should be “more women’s voices” – what they seem to mean is that there should be “more women’s voices of the kind that we agree with”. Like, say, Hillary Clinton, or possibly, Angela Merkel – although Mrs Merkel herself, when asked if she was a feminist recently, seemed reluctant to commit.

Listen, sisters, in this life, you have to take the rough with the smooth. If you want “more women’s voices” in the public arena, you are going to get all varieties of women coming forward. Women in politics are not always going to be your standard soft-liberal-leftie with the predictable views of that ilk.

“Celebrate her achievements”? Inheriting a party from her father?

Excellent spot Garibaldy. Depressing insight into the world view of these folk. Telling isn’t it how quickly some so-called conservatives are happy to embrace post-fascists.

“Women in politics are not always going to be your standard soft-liberal-leftie with the predictable views of that ilk.”

Where is Mary Kenny getting the idea that people think women in politics will automatically be liberal or socialists?

We have the experience of Margaret Thatcher, Phyllis Schlafly, Pauline Hanson, plus Alice Glenn,
Niamh Uí Bhriain and Nora Bennis in this country.

Well the fascists are the fall-back if the neolibs can’t hold it together.

Thus their fetishisation.

it’s the old “Better Hitler than Blum” again….

And why would feminists praise Le Pen anyway, given she is unsympathetic to their movement? Will Kenny next wonder why pacifists don’t praise Dick Cheney?

Could it be that the Sindo doesn’t know what the word ‘feminist’ actually means, in all it’s diversity.

Say it isn’t so.

They accept people like La Pen so readily because her views are not that far away from their own but also because “the Left” hates the likes of La Pen.

Conservatives are open to the Facist in part because they think that anybody the loony left hates THAT much can’t be all bad.

Counterpunch which many believe to be on the Left publishes this moxious person. https://louisproyect.org/2017/04/22/counterpunch-diana-johnstone-defends-marine-le-pen-against-racism-charge-and-rallies-to-the-cause-of-national-sovereignty/ Oh she denies the massacres in Bosnia.

And https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/apr/29/marine-le-pen-putin-trump-axis
I think of the Irish saying “Aitnioon ciarog, ciarog eile”

Yeah, Johnstone is really terrible. You would never seen
“Mother Jones”, “The Progressive”, or “The Nation” give a Le Pen apologist a platform. I see “Counterpunch” is currently appealing for funds. Give such money to another, more deserving website instead.

It’s kind of weird. These are people who aren’t in a way terribly leftwing. Agree with both of you.
