Comes the day comes the news in the SBP this weekend that ‘Dunnes stores to be hit in workers’ rights crackdown’. And what does that mean, but…

Dunes Stores… is set to be hit by the government for its use of low-hour contracts for thousands of its staff. The government is bringing forward legislation to taclkel the issue of insecure working hours for staff with high level political sources saying hat the new laws are genie driven to deal with the employment environment at firms such as Dunnes.

Is it just me or does the use of the word ‘hit’ seem oddly inappropriate in this?

Yes. There were several alternative ways of phrasing the report. It’s not that people don’t say “Company X hit by fine” or “Inflation hits Company Y’s something something” but it seems more natural in this situation to say something like “Dunnes forced to remove boot from workers’ throats”.
