1934 Fianna Fail aims. Wow! Crypto-socialistic, except for the bit about putting as many farm families as possible on the land. How many of these stated aims do grassroots FF supporters really believe in nowadays? And the leadership?

Did FF even try to achieve any of those aims?

The Rathcairn Gaeltacht would have been set up by an FF Government but as for the rest of them, not much progress since.

The Rathcairn Gaeltacht was also part of a Land Commission scheme to resettle small farm families in the West of Ireland on bigger plots of more fertile agricultural land, mainly in Leinster. As for ruralising industries – the West of the Shannon industrial policy led to the creation of the new town of Shannon and the industrial zone geared towards exports. Creamery co-ops inspired by the co-op movement (a non-government social initiative) were about the only rural i.e. non-town industrial initiatives in the first 50 years of independent Ireland. Rural craft industry was promoted in Glencolumbcille in SW Donegal during the 1960s and 70s by Fr. James McDyer, and in the 1980s the building of Knock Airport was pioneered by Msgr James Horan in Mayo. To give him his due, a certain Charles J. Haughey as Taoiseach granted 3m punt funding to help complete the runway, in the face of Dublin media sneers at the time. Some FDI factories were eventually located in small towns in Mayo, Leitrim and Galway in so-called advance factories built by the Industrial Development Authority. (The IDA was created by the FG-led coalition in 1950.) I’d say that there was a patchy and slow achievement of at least two of the 1934 declared FF aims.

We need to know more about the ‘Touts out’ campaign. I thought Leo was all for touting?
