So, a couple of issues to throw into the pot. A change of leadership in Fine Gael, what if any are the implications for the left? Some comprehensive debunking of the idea the LP is exhibiting a revival in Dublin – but how is it going for others in that city? And what about more widely? And how prepared is the left for the next election?

That question of preparedness is interesting. I think all the left is hoping for an election but it may not be a good time. Of all the left-wing parties only Sinn Fein is gaining and their has to be a concern that any election later this year would be Sinn Fein’s third election in under 12 months. You have to wonder if energy and money is flagging. Still I think the best chance for the left is for a FG-FF coalition after the next election with a Sinn Fein opposition so maybe SF’s numbers per se don’t matter as long as its an upward trajectory

I’d take the opposite view – that blunting the Right during a period when they’ve had the wind in their sales from ‘austerity’ is more important. Any effective left-wing brake in government – obviously, we’re not talking about the ILP here – is a win.

Don’t get me wrong if a left grouping can form government after the next election then so much the better. But assuming that’s not possible better opposition then third party status or lower

There seems to be a bit of a fight over an articleby Frank Gaffney (who?) about identity politics and then a response by letter by people put out by it.

Erm… where do you start…?
A general point – it doesn’t make much of an impact to be doggedly ‘anti-austerity’; outside the circle of lefties too stubborn quit that is 🙂
Much more effective is a message of hope centred around what concretely non-austerity would involve. The success of Green Left in Holland in contrast to the stagnation of the Socialist Party there I suggest illustrates this.
Secondly nail fake social democrats for what they are – Podemos’ putting it up the Spanish Socialist Party over their collusion with corruption is an example.
And lastly we need to get the TAMARA (there are many and real alternatives) message as against TINA (there is no alternative) across.
