This Weekend I’ll Mostly Be Listening to… Minor Victories June 10, 2017

2017 has brought a new Slowdive album and very fine it is too – albeit there’s less of Rachel Gosling’s voice than I would like. But here’s last years Minor Victories – a supergroup of sorts with members drawn from Mogwai (Stuart Braithwaite), Justin Lockey of Editors and Gosling herself from Slowdive. Throw in James Locker, Justin Lockey’s brother who’s is himself a film maker and it is an appealing mix with touching on a range of broadly compatible genres – shoe gaze, post-rock (of sorts), alternative and leavened with an electronic push.

Gosling’s voice is high in the mix which is appropriate. The songs are oddly moving, but then with the combined talents of all the above so they should be. There’s some not entirely necessary guest spots – Mark Kozelek of Red House Painters (covered by IEL here) and Sun Kil Moon swings buy for a bit of shared nostalgia with Gosling about the 90s and their friendship, producing a song which is a bit marmite in that some will love it and others not so much, but perhaps this is a necessary abrasive in the context of the album as a whole.

By the way, the videos by James (and I think Justin) are pretty great – particularly Scattered Ashes.
