I suggest this blog should have a regular (weekly) slot where people can post happenings at the personal or political level that gives them hope that we’re perhaps not going to hell in a handbasket as quickly as we thought. Or as the phlegmatic Germans put it “hope dies last”.

These have to be cheaper than those fixed to the sea bed. Massive potential for energy generation.
Ballast and cable tethering system. I hope these have been designed for 320 km/h + sustained wind speeds because there’ll be no bringing them in in the case of a hurricane.
Ireland could be powered by these. Except when the wind didn’t blow. I which case we should all have days off and sit around candles chilling 🙂

Surely something wrong here – as we all know, only the private sector can innovate 😉
Apparently the software adjusts the blades so that the column remains upright. I’m guessing that this reduces wear and tear on bearings etc. Perhaps the real engineers on this site would know better?

Not exactly a sign of hope when an obvious injustice is reluctantly righted, but the decision by theTories to allow ‘free’ abortions for NI women in Britain is the first positive (with reservations- they shouldn’t have to travel in the first place) outcome of the hung parliament.

All the reports I’ve seen say abortions in /England/. Is there something particular about Scotland, or is it because Westminster has no authority over the NHS in Scotland?

I assume it’s because health is devolved. Wasn’t there discussion of doing the same thing in Scotland from the SNP recently though? So it could end up applying in both.

Somewhat odd that the focus on the DUP and their cute folk ways has finally thrown a bit of light on this.

The German parliament just passed legislation allowing same-gender marriage, by a majority of about 60%
It may well become bureaucratically possible by the end of the year for gay and lesbian couples to marry if they wish in Germany.
The die Linke spokesperson Dietmar Bartsch welcomed it as a significant success for the activists who have long campaigned on the issue but noted that the struggle against discrimination on the basis of sexual preference must continue in other areas.
Another plus is that this has caused a certain amount of friction and confusion within the CDU/CSU where the majority voted against but significant numbers for.

I know it’s the wrong thread. It’s not really a sign of hope that corrupt Gulf dictatorships might be about to use their obscene amounts of horribly expensive Western-supplied military hardware against each other. Not a sign of hope cos it’s ordinary Muhammads and Fatimas who end up dead in all wars while the rich push the buttons.
