A man adrift in space July 8, 2017

Who could not but have enormous sympathy for Buzz Aldrin, forced to stand through some bizarrely incoherent ramblings from one D. Trump on the space programme.

Just on that, I am, as some may have guessed, fascinated by all things space-related. That’s what happens when you grow up during the period of the Moon landings and after. But the cynic in me rises fairly rapidly to the top when I hear Presidents – of whatever political stripe, waxing lyric about space exploration. The problem is that funding of the space programmes has been characterised by lack rather than plenty. And some of the decisions have been short termist, irrational and counterproductive.

That Trump wants to spread some of the sparkle over himself is no surprise. The thing is how much sparkle is left?
