Citizens of everywhere and somewhere… August 11, 2017

I’m not a huge fan of Jonathan Freedland but he made a great point on recent Guardian podcast about how the David Goodhart thesis of true community only being visible and (to a degree) possible in mono-ethnic contexts was entirely shown to be incorrect by the events of this summer in London around Grenfall where rather than people being, as May suggested’ in relation to Brexit etc, ‘citizens of everywhere being citizens of nowhere’ they were demonstrable in their actual sense of community and engagement.

Some interesting thoughts too on the manner in which the concept of the activist state has come back into vogue and how it was that Labour and other European social democrats were all too eager to suggest the state was weak which eliding with conservatives wish for a weak state mean that actual engagement was limited.
