Space man… August 12, 2017

Posted by WorldbyStorm in Uncategorized.

Quite a good piece in the SBP on space science in Ireland, and mention of an unlikely figure, Minister of State for Skills and Innovation, John Halligan, who is supporting same. Certainly there’s a broad sweep of endeavours in that area and good to see some interest in them.

But there’s a funny paragraph here…

There has never been an Irish astronaut in space, even though there have been many US astronauts with Irish roots. Buzz Aldrin who took part in the first moon landing with Neil Armstrong in 1969 used to say he was descended from a family of cattle rustlers in Fermanagh.

But there’s another name involved in that mission that surely could hardly be more Irish… The man who stayed in orbit around the Moon during the first Moon landing, step forward… one Michael Collins..
