Varadkar no centrist… true. But nor was he two years ago. September 11, 2017

Brendan Howlin, at the LP meeting this weekend argues that L Varadkar is ‘no European centrist’…

“For a start, Fine Gael are members of Europe’s conservative right wing political family,” he said. “They are not centrists.”
“And in truth, if you had asked me to pick a single representative of the last Government who best represented the views of conservative Christian Democracy, I would have reached for Leo Varadkar,” Mr Howlin said.

And yet, and yet, who was it in power with said government, said party and said representative?

‘Leo Varadkar has categorically ruled out a so-called grand coalition with Fianna Fáil after the next election, saying he wants the current government re-elected.

According to a special report in today’s Irish Examiner, Fine Gael is targeting 60 seats in the next Dáil, an increase of 10 on what it achieved in the 2016 general election.

It can also be revealed that senior Fianna Fáil TDs believe the party can gain at most 10 additional seats at the next election and are angered by leader Micheál Martin’s ruling out of a coalition with Sinn Féin.’

History is full of examples of LP party leaders saying in between stints in government that they would never support FG and beat when push (or power) comes to shove they always do

And the LP tends to do better when they tack left in opposition — Spring pre-1992 and Gilmore pre-2011 — whereas Quinn and Rabbitte always sound like lapsed Fine Gaelers. Will anyone still fall for it?
