WBS mentioned 4AD last week which prompted me to look up and listen to this album.
The 13 Year Itch which was a 4AD compilation released in 1993 of demos and remixes of 4AD artists.
In those pre internet days there was trust in a label (still is now) but when your musical taste was outside of mainstream radio you relied on all sorts to judge what to buy. Trust in a label was one thing and when as often was the case you’d be browsing to buy something, label, cost and so on were factors in what to chose.
I don’t know if it still happens given Spotify, Youtube etc but label compilation albums were fairly prevalent. As opposed to Greatest Hits or the likes of the “Now” franchise.
These label compilations could be the first vinyl outing for a band or have a mix of established and new bands. It was a way of discovering other artists on the label and rare tracks that you might want to get your hands on. I’ve quite a few of these label compilations at home.
This one is particularly good with some of my favourites such as The Red House Painters, Kristin Hersch and others such as Brendan Perry and the excellent Pale Saints.

and just throwing this in as it’s a great cover!

Excellent stuff IEL. I never had this compilation but they were as you say often the only way to hear in the pre-internet age groups one had read about in the music papers. And they survived a long time (indeed some of the magazines still have cover CDs that serve a similar purpose though presumably to a smaller readership). This though is a classic. What a great line up.

That Kirsten Hersch song is even better than the recorded version. A wonderful songwriter.
