I was reading Michael Calvins book “No Hunger in Paradise” over the Christmas and one of the chapters was about Alan Redmond an Irish former drummer in the band “La Rocca” which made two albums and had a hit in Australia. Redmond is now head of the R10 Sports Agency having originally worked in football as a translator for non English speaking players. His work in the area led to the publication of his book ‘Oxford English for Football’.
Redmond spotted a gap where players were signed in multi million pound deals but went to normal English lessons. The Language of the football field is quite different than normal English. Each position would have specific on field words or expressions and failure to understand team mates led to all sorts of wasted opportunities etc.
La Rocca weren’t brilliant but Redmonds time in the music business was in a way comparable to Football and how a player makes it or not. So many talented football players don’t make it just as many talented bands and musicians also don’t make it.
