Gewerkschaftler suggested this recently:

I suggest this blog should have a regular (weekly) slot where people can post happenings at the personal or political level that gives them hope that we’re perhaps not going to hell in a handbasket as quickly as we thought. Or as the phlegmatic Germans put it “hope dies last”.

Any contributions this week?

A Luxembourg court has overturned the conviction of the Luxleaks whistleblower Antoine Deltour on human rights grounds. Deltour gifted us with proof of the extent of (government-assisted) corporate tax evasion.

As Richard Murphy notes here:

Justice has been done.

Whistleblowing tax abuse is in the public interest. Long may it remain so.

It’s a strange & hopeful time in sexual politics.

I sat down to watch a DVD with my daughter the other night and the end credits featured both Weinsteins. She asked ‘How many of those involved are rapists?”, to which I could only reply, “I honestly don’t know.”

So in this context the Penny sisters podcast (Laurie and Eleanor) The Sisterhoodis a breath of fresh air. The latest episode deals with the #metoo movement and what is to be done.

They have simultaneously an educative (for an someone like me not as well read as I should be in feminist thought) and a light conversational touch, and are immersed in digital culture with far more patience and application than I could ever muster.

Sibling rivalry over My Little Pony identification and anti-capitalism. What’s not to like?

The Uber HQ team overseeing Ripley could remotely change passwords and otherwise lock up data on company-owned smartphones, laptops, and desktops as well as shut down the devices. This routine was initially called the unexpected visitor protocol. Employees aware of its existence eventually took to calling it Ripley, after Sigourney Weaver’s flamethrower-wielding hero in the Alien movies. The nickname was inspired by a Ripley line in Aliens, after the acid-blooded extraterrestrials easily best a squad of ground troops. “Nuke the entire site from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure.”

Uber’s dirty little secrets continue to ooze out. Hard to believe that they’ll escape the law – given their rather direct targeting of government and the police.
