Speaking of space… behold the Boeing Starliner… January 13, 2018

Interesting, the Boeing Starliner – a ‘next-generation’ space capsule, or so they say. Good for ten uses – though servicing takes six months. Seven passengers or fewer passengers and more cargo. What would it be like to be in it? Oh, and wifi for tablets. So one isn’t bored on the journey into orbit, presumably.
First crewed flight. 2018. Or 2019. And here’s an interesting one, the crew is already selected for that flight – or rather the names from which the two person flight to the ISS will be selected.

Robert Behnken, Eric Boe, Sunita Williams, and Douglas Hurley.

Not one of them under 47. Some close to 55 when they make the journey. Anyone know why they’d fit that age profile? This mentions it but doesn’t explain why – could it be that at that point they’re still physically strong and have gained some depth of experience in their fields?

And this paper here engages with the issue but again doesn’t quite explain the why…
