Just imagine what Varadkar did following the Cabinet discussions on the Eighth Amendment. Harris was fingered aside and the government was told “I will count to one hundred, and you go hide!”.

FINE GAEL: OPEN WAR ON IRISH NEUTRALITY–The Phoenix Magazine
Defend Our Neutrality https://wp.me/pKzXa-Ut
“Fine Gael’s Four MEPS have been chosen to open up a new front against Irish neutrality with their document to be officially released this week urging the abandonment of Irish neutrality and a stronger military alliance with EU states; in other words an EU army…..
Buried deep on page 117 of the White Paper on Defence, 2015, it states: “Ireland’s financial positon remains extremely difficult…….However the government has resolved that Ireland’s investment in defence over the lifetime of the White Paper must be on a sustainable footing taking account of the long-term national interest.” It adds: “The Government are putting in place new defence review arrangements to elevate discussion and debate in a way which ensures that not withstanding other pressing demands for resourcing, investment in defence is given the appropriate consideration””
Paddy Healy: Note that the Labour Party was in government in 2015 when the White Paper on Defence was published.
In the recent past the Irish government has purchased 4 new ships at a total cost of 250 million Euro. The ships could have been refurbished for a fraction of the cost. Minister of State for Defence , Paul Keogh, has admitted to Seamus Healy TD in the Dail that the government has decided to commission a much bigger multi-role vessel capable of carrying infantry and landing craft. The Irish Examiner, close to naval sources in Haulbowlin, has put the cost of the single vessel at 200 million Euro.
President Macron of France has said that a new invasion of Libya should be considered.
If Irish soldiers and sailors come back from Libya in boxes, will Brian Hayes and his fellow FG MEPS take responsibility?

The four patrol ships are necessary due to the North Atlantic being our home waters (the older ones are worn out and the Atlantic is getting worse for seafaring due to climate change). You’d have much more success arguing against the large expeditionary ship, which has no actual serious UN role that I can see (we can charter in civilian transport or hitch a ride with other nations at will).

Michelle O’Neill said: ““This is a disappointing budget which doesn’t provide the resources needed for the public services our people need and deserve…. there can be no return to direct rule.”

Meanwhile down south:
“Sinn Féin is unlikely to hold an ardfheis to update its abortion policy before the referendum on repealing the Eighth Amendment is held….
Neither Fine Gael nor Fianna Fáil will take a formal position during the referendum campaign and, while Sinn Féin is in favour of repeal, its current party policy does not favour unrestricted abortion up to 12 weeks….
Sources said party officials are having difficulty locating a suitable venue to hold an ardfheis ”

Saoradh’s youth wing is called Éistigí. I peeled a couple of their stickers off a pole there recently. Éistigí – isn’t that just brilliant? The logo is a ripoff of the Éirígí one too. Very funny, imho. ASF has a piece on it https://ansionnachfionn.com/2018/01/31/eistigi-the-youth-wing-of-saoradh/.
Me, all I can think of is Ireland’s one and only as Gaeilge entry for Eurovision – Éistigí, éistigí, cloisim arís é, ceol an ghrá. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4M46Xf2Eik4

I really would love if all that shower heard ceol an ghrá some time soon.

Where the hell are the Repeal the 8th ads? I’ve seen massive anti-abortion posters springing up all over Cork advertising clickbait anti-abortion propaganda.

While the bus had stalled in Patrick St. traffic yesterday, I had to watch a massive truck with the “90% of Down’s Syndrome Babies” lie printed on a massive poster.

And I can’t go online without being pestered by those scurrlious “LoveBoth” ads popping up everywhere.

If the Repeal campaign doesn’t get its skates on, the far-right can look forward to another victory in Europe.

Good march this evening…. incidentally the Sparts were there again (got a leaflet for the Left Archive too!!!).
Also present were The Communist League (UK) . Seem like a strange bunch. I wasn’t quite sure of their origin and the lady wasn’t too pleased when I asked her who they were a split from !!

There was a rally in support at city hall in Belfast, but the anti-choice crowd turned up and created a wall in front of it with their signs. The rally was shouting away, but to any passers-by it looked like an anti-choice rally, with the support of the Belfast Feminist Network et al.

I was talking to a few lads who couldn’t work out what was going on with the confused messaging from across the road…

It’s broken down a bit in this picture, but for a good while there was an unbroken line of anti-choice people with pro-choice groups’ banners above them.

Youth Defence infiltrated the pro-choice rally in Dublin yesterday and handed out fascist signs made up to look like Repeal ones.

One of those responsible has already been identified as a bearded MAGA cap-wearer from the Irexit conference, so this looks like it could be an unusual case of fascists acknowledging themselves to be beyond the pale.

” Fine Gael’s four MEPs have said that given new security threats, it is time to open a debate on Irish security and defence….

The document makes ten recommendations.

They include supporting the development of a European Defence Union which would be subject to Ireland’s traditional position of military non-alignment.

It also proposes redefining the concept of Irish neutrality to allow active engagement in international security operations but again, to remain non-military aligned.”

Of course, as we saw with the MGA shit around the Irexit conference, this lot are really just sad wannabes of the shit-posting US alt-right, so their copying the tactics shouldn’t surprise.

FG MEP Brian Hayes ADMITS That There Are Reasons OTHER THAN “DEFENDING OUR COMMON EUROPEAN HOME” For Changing Irish Neutrality- Economist Colm McCarthy sets out The Reasons- Politics Professor, Dr Mary C Murphy Was Right! She set out possible scenarios in which Ireland might be required to be giving in terms of neutrality or taxation, in a debate on the future of Europe
Defend Irish Neutrality https://wp.me/pKzXa-Ut
Brian Hayes MEP: “However Ireland, as one of the most successful small countries, a country transformed by EU membership, must be aware of other (EU member) countries’ concerns. It would be bad politics to do otherwise—–
A policy of developing our security and defence interests, similar to what Sweden and Finland have done in recent years, will make it easier for us to be part of THE CORE of EU decision-making and EU design” Sunday Independent March 11
Dr Mary C Murphy of the Department of Politics and Government at UCC said there may be an element of “payback” for Ireland in return for the support the State has received from others members of the EU27.
Dr Murphy was speaking in the final session of the Killarney Economic Conference, Jan 13 2018, which was chaired by Mark Hennessy of The Irish Times.
She set out possible scenarios in which Ireland might be required to be giving in terms of neutrality or taxation, in a debate on the future of Europe.
Economist Colm McCarthy:“After 5 years of strong recovery, the country’s economic prospects are exposed to developments in EU Policy under 3 headings: There will be profound effects from Brexit, about efforts to harmonise corporation profits tax and about future governance of the Eurozone.” Sunday Independent March 11

Sources have told RTÉ News, foreign private equity funds have stepped back from activity in Ireland until there is clarity about the proposed legislation.

It is understood there are concerns that the legislation as currently drafted could affect a broader category of financial activity beyond loans in arrears. It could include the securitisation of loans which is part of regular banking activity.

No mention from the RTÉ economics editor about ‘securitisation’ of home loans being the torpedo which sank the global economy ten years ago, ffs.

EU STRUCTURED MILITARY CO-OPERATION (PESCO) is JUST A “Good Start”-Brian Hayes FG MEP Sunday Independent March 11, 2018
“Whether we like it or Not, The issue of integrating European security and defence is on the agenda. PESCO, which the government signed up to last year, is a good start but it is a project-based plan. Many want to go further by putting in place a Deeper European Union –a key priority of EU into the Future.”
Defend Irish Neutrality Paddy Healy https://wp.me/pKzXa-Ut
Hayes claims that this will not lead to an EU Army. But he fails to point out that it will be a far closer military alliance than exists between countries who are members of NATO, -US, France, Britain, Italy etc. Like much of the FG MEPS’ Document , his denial misleads.

Spy, counterspy. The murk gets murkier.

Good piece by Jane Mayer on Christopher Steele and the infamous dossier:

“Two of his earliest cases at Orbis involved investigating international crime rings whose leaders, coincidentally, were based in New York’s Trump Tower….
Steele’s sources claimed that the F.S.B. could easily blackmail Trump,…
it’s clear that Steele believed that his dossier was filled with important intelligence. Otherwise, he would never have subjected it, his firm, and his reputation to the harsh scrutiny of the F.B.I….
Steele believed that the Russians were engaged in the biggest electoral crime in U.S. history, and wondered why the F.B.I. and the State Department didn’t seem to be taking the threat seriously. ”
https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2018/03/12/christopher-steele-the-man-behind-the-trump-dossier

“The former Russian double agent authorities believe was poisoned with a nerve agent in the U.K. reportedly has links to the former British intelligence officer who authored the infamous Donald Trump–Russia dossier that has overshadowed the U.S. president throughout his time in office.”
http://www.newsweek.com/russia-poison-spy-steele-dossier-836768

“does not allow one to rule out the possibility that the Salisbury poisoning was the work of rogue factions within Russia, outside Putin’s control and there are no doubt conspiracy theorists out there happy to asset that this was a false flag operation.

This is mentioned in a level piece by the Christian Science Monitor. Predictably, it says, some Russian analysts are claiming the attack on Mr. Skripal might have been a false flag operation by Western interests:”-Richard North.
