This Weekend I’ll Mostly Be Listening to… Grouper March 10, 2018

Posted by WorldbyStorm in Uncategorized.

Ambient drone all the way from 2007, Grouper aka Liz Harris and her album Cover the Windows and the Walls. Muted reverb-treated vocals, set against drones and guitars that waft in and out. The title track alone is worth the price of admission. I’m reminded a little of Belong, albeit Belong take this sort of sound to near absurd places.

I particularly like the reason for the name:

When I had to think of a name I felt annoyed at nothing sounding right. I wanted something that referenced me without referencing ‘Me.'” According to her, she “felt like the music was at its barest just a grouping of sounds, and I was just the grouper.”[3]”

Her later works are more spartan and well worth a listen.

My favourite act! She’s playing the Unitarian Church in Stephen’s Green in May, which is well worth going to, especially seeing as she doesn’t really tour.

If you like the fuller ambient sound of the first two records then the AIA albums fit, but loads of the best work is hidden on singles, splits & EPs too. I like the later, bare sound myself.

Wow, I did not know that re her playing here. Thanks a million for the heads up.

And I’ll definitely follow up your thoughts on singles, splits EPs. Very much appreciated aidan.
