trackback

One of the many Blues singers and guitar players that came to prominence after being recorded by Alan Lomax in the late 50’s. He was one of the Mississippi Hill Country Blues style .
Alan Lomax described McDowell as “a bluesman quite the equal of Son House and Muddy Waters, but, musically speaking, their granddaddy.”
Despite the ‘Mississippi’ moniker he was actually born and raised in Tennessee.
The short documentary below is quite good.

I would encourage folks who enjoy this to check out the series, “when the sun goes down, a secret history of rock and roll”. A multi disc collection that is just phenomenal. My personal favorite is vol. 10 (IIRC) the East Virginia Blues”.
