This Weekend I’ll Mostly Be Listening to… The Rolling Stones May 12, 2018

I’ll be in Croke Park next Thursday to see The Rolling Stones. I’ve never seen them before and as a voluntary steward in Croker I figure I may as as well pop along for the day. I’ve seen all sorts there since I started doing it in 1996. I’ve drawn a line in that I didn’t bother going along to Celine Dion, Westlife, Elton John and I think I was away for Garth Brooks. Beyoncé clashed with The Stone Roses and there was only ever going to be one winner there! This Summer well I’ll give Michael Bublé and The Pope a miss. I intend popping along to one night of Taylor Swift. As I’ve said before the ones that you think will be great are often crap (Red Hot Chilli Peppers), the ones you are wary of can be excellent entertainment (That That) and then there’s ones you go along to out of curiosity and was heartily sorry that you did (One Direction).
“Rolled Gold -The Very Best of the Rolling Stones” was one of the soundtracks to my youth. Thats it though now, will the Stones be good, they’ve such an incredible back calalogue they’d really have to be.

Interesting re the Chilli Peppers, though perhaps not surprising. I suspect I’ll be hearing the gig (given I’ve heard U2, Take That etc from the back yard, and pretty clearly when the wind is in the right direction).

Do you remember the divide was generally between Stones and Beatles people (with a side order of Velvet Underground or Hendrix for some). I was always Beatles and VU/Hendrix inclined. Don’t know why really. Part of it was I never liked the Stones as people much, there was too much ‘rock star’ vibe off them whereas others were a bit less obvious. It is amazing they’re still at it, the Stones, though never really warmed to them overall some of their songs are literal classics and the chance to hear them would be great (and hey, I think I will!). Hope it’s an enjoyable evening.
