The longest day… June 21, 2018

Is today. From here on out the evenings get shorter, the mornings less bright – though in truth sunset and sunrise remain pretty much of a muchness for the next week or two. Sunrise is 4.56 am and sunset at 21.57 pm today. By the end of July sunrise will be 5.39 am and sunset 21.22. By the end of August it’s 6.32 am and 20.17 pm. And so on.
And soon enough it will be 2019!

Actually, the evenings get longer tomorrow and stay longer than today’s for nearly a week. The mornings do get shorter, though, and by enough to shorten the total daylight (by four seconds tomorrow).

Tomboktu, what’s the reason for that unintuitive fact, out of interest?

Ah now. Can you not just accept that God decided to do it that way. Does he have to have a reason?

It’s the vibes of Mother Earth, man.

I was fascinated to learn, on a more scientific note, that we now measure the disappearance of the ice caps by means of gravitational field differences in satellites as they pass over the poles. (Ice is now melting in the Antarctic at a rate of 3 times what was measured in 2012 BTW.)

Talking of which is gravity particularly strong in the immediate vicinity of a certain Brazilian number 10?

There’s another thread needs starting – World Cup 2018.

No Joe, No please..who wants to talk about dope fuelled multi millionaires chasing a ball made my the hands of a child?
How come nobody’s talking about the Peruvian captain who tested positive for drugs two months ago(?) but was allowed to play…

Ronaldo is a self-obsessed multi-millionaire. His free kick to equalise and make it 3 all against Spain with just minutes to go… that was sublime.
Luka Modric is a millionaire too. His goal against Argentina yesterday was sublime too.
Two goals that were things of beauty. Two goals that elicited shouts of joy from me on the couch.

I know that professional football is a capitalist plot and that the wage differentials are obscene. It is an opium for the people. I’m hooked, what can I say?
Leeds United did a summer tour to Myanmar. They’ve just appointed a former manager of Argentina as team manager. They’ve promised him loadsamoney to buy players to get them promoted to the obscene Premiership. I know I shouldn’t but… Here we go with Leeds United.

Fergal, you are probably right. Association Football should have been abolished in about 1974 after Don Revie’s great team went into decline. The greatest team that ever played the game. We never had it so good and never will again.
However, in the meantime we’ll make do with shouts of joy from the couch at beautiful goals. It still can be and often is the beautiful game.

I think gravity works differently if you think you’re a contender for being the “GOAT”.

” because of a discrepancy between our modern-day timekeeping methods and how time is measured using the Sun known as the equation of time”

(I don’t actually understand the answer, you know. I’d need a model with spinning orb to do that.)
