‘…strong links to the Republic of Ireland…’ July 10, 2018

How good of Maria Caulfield Tory MP, and Tory Vice-Chair to remember Ireland in her resignation letter – one of two vice-chairs who resigned this afternoon…

But what on earth does she mean in the following paragraph?

For me the backstop agreement for Northern Ireland was neither necessary or constructive for the future prosperity of the UK. Having strong links to the Republic of Ireland I feel the backstop position is not appropriate and should have been rejected. It has been used by the EU as a way of blocking a mutually beneficial deal.

Perhaps she could have asked, y’know, the ROI about its feelings on the matter and whether it was appropriate or not.

In the UK doesn’t close links to Ireland just mean you have one or more Irish grandparents?

Sorry, it’s supposed to be a Readers’ Competition (a CLR first?). You finish the sentence below in not less than than three words:

Having strong links to the UK, I feel that

Ok. I’ll start.

Having strong links to the UK, I feel that it would be better overall for everybody, absolutely everybody, if Croatia won tonight.

Hear me now, Joe. I don’t mind them getting to the semi final. But that’s enough. They are already talking about 1966.

I’m predicting an Ingerland win tonight Ali. Really looking forward to the game and the occasion. Great to have no skin in the game (bar my strong links to the UK and my shared Catholic heritage with the Croats).

I was in a beer garden with large numbers of Croat ‘economic migrants’. I said to my companions when Ingerland were 1:0 up “I’m off to the jacks and during that time Croatia are bound to score.”

And lo, it came to pass. So the Sun can blame it on my bladder. As potent as the Mick Jagger effect.

The Croatians went a bit mad after the match.

Having strong links with UK….

I feel that it was best for everybody that Croatia won last night because perhaps it might contribute to the English nationalists ongoing reality therapy. They might even recognise the reality of needing to accept the backstop position in a legally binding treaty / withdrawal agreement.

I shudder to think what volatile England-France nationalist passions might have been whipped up if England had beaten Croatia to the final. French culture & grand empire versus English culture & plus grand empire – atavistic dynamite.
Croatia is the big surprise of the World Cup tournament and a great morale boost to the Slavic world, but I think ‘les bleus’ will win on Sunday. Et apres le Brexit – le deluge.
