Presidential elections and relevance July 11, 2018

Reading the reports this morning that (some) Independents are keen to field a competitor to the incumbent President, Michael D. Higgins, at the next Presidential election it struck me that it is telling that they would be doing so. It raises their profile, announces to the world that they’re still around and have some relevance during a period where the parties and particularly the larger parties have been seeing support slowly coalesce around them

A bit of a gamble though given the popularity of the President. Not difficult to see the line ‘this is a terrible and unnecessary waste of money’ get legs.
