This Weekend I’ll Mostly Be Listening to… Jefre Cantu-Ledesma – On the Echoing Green September 8, 2018

Here’s another album from last year – from ambient exponent Jefre Cantu-Ledesma who appears to be tipping into shoe gaze. There’s something of Disco Inferno about its sounds and rhythms perhaps most notably on A Song of Summer, albeit not with the excoriating political and social critique of that group. The harmonies, treated piano and guitar sounds are like a warm Factory act of the early 1980s. I think of Durutti Column (IEL did a piece on them here) in particular. Cantu-Ledesma has not been shy to point to the influence of DC and others.

But I don’t want to sell what is a truly excellent 38 minutes of music short. This may touch on those (genuinely outstanding) reference points, very likely as form following function, but that warmth is all its own. And then in amongst the shoe gaze is real sonic grit. Listen to In A Copse or Autumn and the discordant noises and drones and there’s nothing comfortable about them. Yet they add to a sense that this is a set of songs which bring the listener with them and sound fresh and new and compelling.

In A Copse

A Song of Summer

Tenderness

The Faun

Autumn
