And here’s a question, how does the welcome from the ex-LP 8 to the ex-Tory 3 play with some LPers who tempted to join might find such a clearly ‘centrist’ link up a bit too rich even for their blood? Or perhaps they don’t care.

The British system tends to insulate MPs from political realities. Here every TD needs to know their constituencies and to at least appear to listen to them – for fear of being outvoted by their party colleagues as much as their rivals. If nothing else it leaves them with a keen sense of what will fly with the public and what won’t.
Could it be that the safe-seat/Westminster-bubble effect has been enough to leave the new independents believing their own hype, and imagining that the good wishes of the intelligentsia might be enough to get them elected, and to break the 2 party mould.

Brexit appears to have achieved some kind of autonomy at this point;
Brexit is affecting the political parties, but the political parties are not affecting Brexit. None of the factions can prevent Brexit, and there is no majority support for the Brexits on offer. So the system is beginning to fragment.
