Signs of Hope – A continuing series April 18, 2019

Gewerkschaftler suggested this recently:

I suggest this blog should have a regular (weekly) slot where people can post happenings at the personal or political level that gives them hope that we’re perhaps not going to hell in a handbasket as quickly as we thought. Or as the phlegmatic Germans put it “hope dies last”.

Any contributions this week?

This week – Climate Rebellion in the UK.

Ignore all the meeja bollix about sticking themselves to Corbyn’s wall and what Jezzer did or did not do. These people are willing to cause major disruption and get arrested by the hundreds to bring attention to the most important challenge bar none that we face as a species embedded in a planetary complex of eco-systems.

More power to their adhesive elbows. They are an ideal complement to Fridays For Futures, which I should be able to get to this Friday, given the holiday that’s in it.

And I’m sure the better class of Christian would agree that’s a good way to spend it.

Yep. It’s good news all round. A bonanza in Garda overtime this weekend apparently in anticipation of locking up a load of these climate change disrupters for the Easter.

a new poll has put the Conservative Party’s level of support for a General Election down in the low 20s, their worst poll rating for many years. Richly deserved given the UK still remains in the European Union and is now set to vote for another batch of British MEPs.

ComRes Chairman, Andrew Hawkins, is quoted by The Telegraph as saying: “This is the lowest level of Tory support I can remember in 16 years in this job.”

Last night he also posted a graphic that explained why the Conservatives are “haemorrhaging voters to the Brexit Party” that shows Tory voters favour a No Deal Brexit, with 60% backing such an outcome.

Meanwhile 72% of Conservatives are against a long Brexit delay to negotiate a Customs Union deal and 70% would find a referendum on May’s deal vs. Remain as ‘unacceptable’.

“African and Asian migrants working on Irish fishing trawlers are to be given new immigration rights to protect them from trafficking and modern slavery….
Non-EEA fishing workers will no longer be tied to employers and will be able to leave a boat to find other work without fear of deportation under a new immigration agreement between the Irish government and the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF),….
The ITF collected testimony for the court from dozens of Ghanaian, Egyptian and Filipino migrant workers that showed that under the permit scheme some trawler companies were still paying a fraction of the legal minimum wage, and were regularly requiring migrants to work dangerously long hours without sleep, resulting in repeated cases of industrial injury.
The Garda National Immigration Bureau’s anti-trafficking unit has formally identified 26 men as suspected victims of modern slavery in the Irish fishing fleet in the last year….
the US state department was about to downgrade Ireland’s ranking in its annual Trafficking in Persons (TIP) report for failing to do enough to tackle modern slavery, ”
