Anyone catch the debate last night on RTÉ with the Ireland South candidates, and what did people make of it. A good report here, but here’s a question, how much – if at all – do such debates shape voters votes?

On a purely anecdotal basis, I find the most common response from people when you talk about RTE debates is “Everyone was talking over each other”. The GF was disgusted by a recent Radio One debate with the Dublin candidates for that reason, and there was no one she found impressive. I think a debate format that was extremely strict on rules, speaking time and not allowing candidates to speak over each other would be very useful in the run-up to votes, but I suppose it might not be the kind of carcrash ratings grabber tv stations need it to be.
