The world of workers…a continuing series June 19, 2019

This story of workplace relations is unfortunately all too believable…

A receptionist has been awarded €51,168 by the Labour Court as compensation for discrimination over how she was treated when she returned to work from maternity leave.
The award is the highest available to the Labour Court and is untaxed. The court found against G4S Security Solutions (Ireland), the woman’s former employer.

There’s so many aspects to this – she was offered a different and much more difficult to reach job, then effectively fired but not given a P45. She had to move in with her parents after being unable to pay the rent on her apartment and originally was awarded €11,602 at the WRC before both parties appealed to the Labour Court where she received the higher figure.

G4S’s excuses are worth reading… it says a lot about the imbalance of power in these relationships.

“The WRC adjudication officer had awarded Ms Kelly €11,602. Both parties appealed, with G4S appealing the decision and Ms Kelly appealing the size of the award.”

It’s brilliant. Serve G4S right.
