Does Gweedore deserve a higher state pension than Glenageary?

This (latest) FG gambit to sabotage the state pension system needs pushback. Bringing in variations, means testing etc. undermines the whole concept, possibly fatally, by people ideologically opposed it in the first place.

Completely agree. The line about ‘gravy train’ in relation to the state pension is borderline offensive too.

This extreme FG suggestion must be fully resisted. The state old Age pension is higher than the MESL (Minimum Effective Standard of Living) in all locations according to Minister ReginaDoherty!! She seems to be suggesting that there should be no increases in such payments until such pensioned incomes fall to MESL. (Finian McGrath is Doherty’s junior minister. Will the Doherty principle apply to disability payments also???)

If the British government has long promised two things which are, on the face of it, mutually exclusive – ie, leaving the single market and customs union while having no disruption to trade on the Border – the Irish Government has been guilty of something similar: promising to protect the single market while insisting there would be no Border checks.
These two propositions were in no way ‘similar’ (the latter has a basis in defening both the GFA and our EU membership), but we’re starting to see kite-flying on the subject of cutting the North loose for parochial concerns in Dublin.
The dangers are real in upsetting the GFA applecart, no matter what backroom understanding might be going on between Dublin and London.

That’s an extremely irritating line on them being ‘something similar’ and as you rightly say flat out wrong.

Anyone else notice an uptick in the IT surreptitiously editing its own online articles? The above originally had Pearse Doherty’s picture prominently in it (of the eight was only a day under the limit) which prompted much well-deserved criticism online.
An interview with James Nesbitt a few days ago also had a misleading headline claiming that he was ‘proud’ to be Northern Irish; decidedly not what he said in the article itself, where he talks about his discovery of his Irishness. This too has been quietly changed in the online edition.

It is outrageous to outsource life or death medical scans to a foreign country where The Irish state is not in a position to enforce standards. How many have died or will die as a result? Successive Irish Governments are responsible. The HSE was set up to “outsource” Government responsibility!

This is important reading.
ALEC played a key role – together with the State Policy Network (SPN), an association of conservative think tanks – in pushing legislation that was deliberately designed to undermine public sector unions. Notably, this was intended to help change the structural conditions of America’s politics. As SPN’s head emphasized, these reforms had the promise of “permanently depriving [italics in original] the Left from [sic] access to millions of dollars in dues extracted from unwilling union members every election cycle” and making it far easier to pass other “pro-freedom initiatives.” It plausibly succeeded – Hertel-Fernandez’ work with James Feigenbaum and Vanessa Williamson suggests that such measures led to a 3.5% drop-off in votes for Democratic candidates, and a 2% drop in voter turnout.
