After Lynch’s speech I stood on the side of the road in Donegal town and watched the convoy of southern-command troops move up towards the Dunree camp outside Buncrana.

To 18-year-old eyes the 40-truck convoy seemed very impressive at first. Then I noticed something odd. A jeep stopped at every shop along the way; a soldier went in and bought all the available food. At least ten of the 40-odd trucks had broken down and were being towed.

That night I listened on the radio to unionist politicians make speeches about an ‘invasion force’ !
