Climate Strike Dublin September 24, 2019

The Global Climate Strikes took place on Friday. I was in at the Dublin protest and it was huge, there could have been 25,000 there. Met loads of people and mostly people I wouldn’t have bumped into at a protest before.
One thing of interest was that it was “non political” and parties were not allowed set up within the cordon in Merrion Square (I gather some of the organisers threatened to call the Police if a certain Party didn’t move their table!). Yet the thing is that it’s seen as a Green issue and that it would be The Green Party that will profit electorally from this, purely because of their name and reputation.
There is a vast swathe of young voters and for many of those old enough to vote in the next few years the Climate Crisis is the biggest issue. Indeed I can see upward pressure from Children for their parents to vote Green too.
A lot of the usual stuff criticising the Young people for missing School, getting lifts to the march in an SUV and so on. All well wide of the mark. From my own experience, The Climate Crisis and the Environment is something that is a big thing in my own house. Lifts are offered but the children will walk or get the bus with their friends to wherever they are going (that is in part an age thing!!). Shopping recently plastic packaging was frowned upon, any beef product was put back on the shelf and so on.
Friends with smaller children tell me of when they but something in plastic packaging their children asking “Do you not love turtles?”.

That is the problem – because the Green Parties are dominated these days by eco-capitalists. And there is no way to tackle the climate emergency other than through the public ownership and democratic control of energy production and distribution, transport and indeed agriculture, as well as the democratic control of finance as a minimum.

The Green parties will cooperate with capitalist interests in pushing greenwashing ‘solutions’ like the replacement of direct fossil fuel based private transport with private transport with electric moters.

There is room for a left green alliance that will give the lie to the eco-capitalist pseudo-solutions of most Green parties, and propose real solutions to the climate emergency based on the public ownership and democratic control of the aspects of the human economy that curently do the most damage to bio- and climate-systems.
