On the 10/11 October the Politburo of the DDR cancelled a visit by Erich Honecker to Denmark. According to wikipedia:

…despite his resistance, at the insistence of the regime’s number-two man, Egon Krenz, a public statement was issued that called for “suggestions for attractive socialism”

On 17 October the Party leadership met, shaken by the protests of the previous day. The Prime Minister of the DDR, Willi Stoph began the meeting by saying:

‘Please General Secretary, Erich, I suggest a new first time be placed on the agenda. it is the release of Erich Honecker from his duties as General Secretary, and the election of Egon Krenz in his place.’

On foot of a unanimous vote to remove him he was replaced by Krenz.

However the protests continued unabated, with the demand for his resignation now being made.
