Conspiracy and attention-seeking… November 10, 2019

In this piece on flat-earth proponents in Brazil one quote stands out.

Marcelo Gleiser, a Brazilian professor of physics and astronomy at Dartmouth College in the United States and winner of this year’s Templeton Prize, described the resurgence of the theory as “very sad”.

“We’re living in very strange times. The idea of being popular for being outrageous is coming from the leadership,” he said.

That is it exactly. This is about attention seeking behaviours, a cosmetic popularity, and so on. That it is easy, with little or no effort required is merely an additional bonus for those indulging in it. It is in part the end product of systems of communication where the content is near enough irrelevant as long as those engaging with them are in sufficient numbers.
