Speaking of flying… December 7, 2019

This is great, efforts to build flying platforms, as it were, for aircraft. They’re all pretty small scale, at least as compared to this from Captain Scarlet…

Still, they’re fascinating, not least the Boeing Airborne Aircraft Carrier, something one has to think was of dubious utility. Then again this was probably the most elaborate expansion on the idea.

…a Nuclear-powered aircraft of huge size, with a wing span of 1,120 feet (340 m). Had it been built, it would have had the largest span of any airplane to date.[1]

The airborne aircraft carrier could carry up to 22 fighter aircraft externally and had an internal dock capable of handling two air-to-ground shuttle transport aircraft.

From about two minutes in on this video, including attempts to dock with the carrier

I presume the latter was more in the way of a rather fancy bunker for some American officials to survive a nuclear exchange. I don’t see the utilty, otherwise (i.e. the development of one thing just led to a counter, like the SR.71 and the Foxbat).

Probably more like having an aircraft Cattier that didn’t need to be on water: you could keep aircraft near where you wanted them.
