She announced today that she had decided not to stand in this election

Dublin Central is going to be very interesting now.

Even with some of Gary Gannon’s missteps recently, re housing votes on DCC, this has to be a must win for the Social Democrats now.

You’d have to think so – name recognition etc but I wonder could rising gp and residual sds name recognition cancel each other out?

No hint of O’Sullivan endorsing anyone in her message either, if she was to do so it could turn into an ever bigger dogfight for those last two seats. But who would it be?

That’s a great question. I can’t think of anyone – of course not every candidate is declared either

I don’t know about an endorsement, but Christy Burke might stand to benefit from her absence? One of several who out-polled O’Sullivan on the first count in 2016, only to fall behind her.

Yeah, or Cieran Perry if he stands.

Didn’t Gregory and then O’Sullivan have a loose group/mini-party behind them? Didn’t that group select O’Sullivan to be the candidate after Gregory’s untimely passing?
Anyone know does it still exist and function?
They might yet propose a candidate or back one of the already-declared candidates?

It certainly opens things up a fair bit. But by how much? She had, how many, less than 2000 first prefs last time iirc. She got elected by strong transfers on each count. (Actually I wonder were there any tallies done of her second prefs at the count last time?). My guess is her vote will go all over the place rather than clearly to one or other candidate.

I wouldn’t say Gannon is a certainty. The Green could do for him. I’d still say 1 FF, 1 FG, 1 SF and the last seat to play for. Between Gannon, Hourigan, Burke, Costello..

The “Gregory Group”, but couldn’t tell you if that still exists outside of O’Sullivan’s personal constituency team.

Gary Gannon was once inside that camp I think?

He was. I’m reliably informed that the old codgers didn’t like him.

Not hard to imagine. GG is not someone you would describe as plagued by self-doubt.

There were a series of Gregory Councillors after Maureen O’Sullivan was elected. Anna Quigley, Marie Metcalfe and Mel MacGiobúin were three. Mick Rafferty was another Gregory Councillor elected in 2004 I think. Mel MacGiobúin failed to win a seat in the 2014 Local Elections.
