This Weekend I’ll Mostly Be Listening to… Songs about Robots February 15, 2020

And why not? The very concept of the robot is remarkable, conflicted as with all things, robots as helpers and as opponents. The robot as a sort of stand-in for the alienated or the oppressed, or indeed the oppressor itself. It embodies modernity but at this remove can seem oddly antiquated. A staple of science fiction but also of horror. Political allegory too, in the case of Inner City Unit. Who could they be writing about? I could go on…

There are albums about robots – The Man Machine by Kraftwerk. Songs about robots in trouble – Hawkwind and Rush (always liked those two). They transcend genre, punk (The Saints), psych-rock, space rock (natch!), electronica (VMCG and Kraftwerk), everyone likes to write about robots (or androids, as with Rush but in a way I’ve never really bought the distinction between the two – hey, shouldn’t the Bladerunner sound track be in here?)…But let’s let the music speak for itself! All contributions welcome…
