Gewerkschaftler suggested this recently:

I suggest this blog should have a regular (weekly) slot where people can post happenings at the personal or political level that gives them hope that we’re perhaps not going to hell in a handbasket as quickly as we thought. Or as the phlegmatic Germans put it “hope dies last”.

Any contributions this week?

In the Hamburg state/city government elections, parties to the right of the SPD all did badly. The AfD just about got over the 5% hurdle to enter the regional parliament. But their allies, the neolib FDP, may well have been punished to working with the fascists in Thuringia to attempt to form a government, and exit the parliament.

Looks like a continuation of the current SPD/Green government.

The SPD is embroiled in a scandal whereby the Hamburg-based Warburg bank was let of the fines imposed due to a tax-scam called Cum Ex which cost the public purse billions in lost revenue. Both the current Mayor of Hamburg and the previous one, now German finance minister, had at least some involvement. But the SPD only lost a few percent of the votes, more than made up for in the increase of the Green vote.

Die Linke increased their vote somewhat.

OK – it looks like the militant neolibs and Fascist-fancier party the FDP didn’t pass the 5% hurdle after a recount. Good news.

That said, the opposition of the SPD and the Greens to rent control in Hamburg speaks volumes about them. Meanwhile rents are allowed to rise dramatically in Hamburg.

It takes a left party – like die Linke in Berlin – to force such issues through in coalition.

Lessons for Ireland there.
