That phone on Veronica Mars February 29, 2020

Was mightily impressed by the tech in Veronica Mars, not least the use of computers in a pre-smartphone era. But I really like the phone she sports – a variant of this, the T-Mobile Sidekick II which features a slideable screen that moves vertically to reveal a keyboard. Screen was LCD, ‘transreflective’ apparently allowing messages to be read even in sunlight. In essence it was a cross between a PDA and a telephone. And it managed to survive until the very early 2010s.

My favourite phone ever was and remains the old Nokia N95. I absolutely loved that phone, from the design to the user interface. It just looked like a piece of classy technology.

Yeah, and the sliding mechanism to reveal the keypad was wonderful. In fact the biggest complaint Nokia repair shops had was that owners would constantly play with the slider, pushing it back and forth because the mechanism was so smooth. It was similar to that satisfying “clunk” you get from the door on a really expensive car.

When I went to my first touch screen phone I gave up texting as such because no digital keyboard could compare to the physical one on the N95. Who uses SMS as much anymore with instant messaging, internet calling and vid-calls now available? At least in Ireland.
