Statements in the media… good, bad and indifferent… March 29, 2020

Again, for the duration of the crisis a slightly different format – some positivity mixed in here as well. So good statements welcome too.

Or even just thought-provoking ones. Never expected to read the following this early into the 21st century. It is from RTÉ’s Sean Whelan reporting from a (near deserted, at least in shops and streets) London…

It was a glorious spring day, skies of pure blue, untroubled by the usual criss-cross of contrails, thanks to the collapse of aviation.

On the other hand there’s this which seems far too kind to its subject.

And by contrast this seems a sensible point by Robin Swann of the UUP.

THE MINISTER for Health for Northern Ireland, Robin Swann, has said he is willing to call on the Irish Army for help during the coronavirus crisis.

While as Health Minister he does not have the power to call on the military without the agreement of others in government such as the Secretary of State as well as the PSNI, Mr Swann said that Northern Ireland should be willing to call in both the British and the Irish Army to protect people in Northern Ireland if there is a need for it.

All other contributions welcome.

UK government is giving heavy briefings in the press blaming China (Trump-style) and NHS administrators for the current catastrophe. Several journos claim that a whispering campaign organised out of Downing Street is behind this weekend’s Mail, Telegraph, etc stories.

China has a lot to answer for in its initial actions but this is not the time for this bull.

That’s disgraceful on the part of the UK government. As you say the PRC made egregious errors early on but its efforts subsequently have been remarkable and sustained and a lot of people are alive now because of them.

I don’t know about you, but I haven’t been following any news on this topic. There’s no point. It just makes people anxious. I see it all around me: people following every update, every new tweet, every worst-case scenario… All they do is fret. Me, I’m cool as a cucumber. I’ve been watching a lot of YouTube. There are a whole bunch of videos of planes landing at an airport on some island in the Caribbean, where the planes are about ten feet off the ground as they pass over a beach crowded with people!

I know that video. They’re not really that low. The clearance would be multiples of tens of feet. I’ve restricted my intake of news very very much. Hardly read the UK stuff. Stick to Irish and occasional forays onto Slate, which is I think I mentioned previously a bit rubbish compared to how it used to be ten or so years back. But I do follow links people post on here.

Joe Biden is almost certain to be the American Democratic Party Presidential Candidate in November 2020.

Tariq Ali Brilliantly Translates a Baffling Biden Statement About the CoronaVirus into the English Language ;

“People are puzzled by this one, but in fact, it’s Biden at his most lucid. What he’s saying is that he needs to be taken into care because even though he is the cure to the Trump virus he will make all the problems worse no matter what.” https://tomasoflatharta.wordpress.com/2020/03/29/biden-we-have-to-take-care-of-the-cure-that-will-make-the-problem-worse-no-matter-what-video-realclearpolitics/

“In 1952, China blamed the Yanks for spreading germs to weaken the Chinese war effort in the Korean War (a claim backed at the time by many experts, including my teacher Joseph Needham, an eminent Sinologist and friend of China who specialised in Chinese science). Here’s a poster from the period, with contemporary reference to the foul-breathed Trump, who spreads pestilence just by opening his vile mouth”
