Crisis times… April 1, 2020

Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan has undergone tests in hospital that are unrelated to Covid-19.Dr Holohan said he expects to be discharged tomorrow morning and to be back at work shortly afterwards.

One can only imagine the stresses and strains that he is under.

Meanwhile as noted this week, the advice on shopping here begins to be more broadly publicised. In other words clean packaging of foods that go in fridge and freezer and anything that can be left alone keep separate for 72 hours so any chance of the virus being on surfaces diminishes. And as EWI also noted, clean phones if brought to the shops. Was in ALDI yesterday in East Wall in the morning and it was noticeably quieter than any day before with screens installed at tills to protect workers. They’ll be there from now on after the crisis abates I’d imagine, and proper order. The health of workers in retail and other areas where there is direct contact with others has been largely ignored for far too long. That’s a workers issue.

On a more cheerful note, or less gloomy note, delete as applicable, the IT notes that April Fool’s were noticeably thinner on the ground this year. Some good ones. Had a chat about the one on this site this morning before hand, but thought it wasn’t over the top so ran with it anyhow.

And that election in the Seanad? The results continue to come in. Good to see SF’s Lynn Boylan take a seat.

This man has a tough job too.

“Anthony Fauci has been waging a war—a war of persuasion. He’s had to convince a diverse, federalist, hyper-partisan country to take the threat of the virus seriously. And in order to do that, he’s had to first convince President Donald Trump…..

“I just stick very strictly to the science and the evidence base. I’m not new to this. I’ve been doing this now for over 30 years, starting with the HIV/AIDS issues with President [Ronald] Reagan, and I have found, and it’s proven time and time again: stick with the science, stay completely out of the politics. I have no ideology. My ideology is health, public health, and science. You do that. You can make it uncomplicated. If you get involved in political rhetoric, then it gets complicated.”

“At the same time Fauci is facing a raging coronavirus pandemic he’s also been hit with another viral entity — online conspiracy theories aimed at discrediting him….
A video and image of Fauci tilting his head down and touching his forehead while standing behind Trump went viral when some took Fauci’s body language as a sign of exasperation because the president had just referred to the State Department as the “Deep State Department.”
After that March 20 briefing, the hashtags #FauciFraud grew in popularity. Conservative groups began publishing anti-Fauci posts, which were then promoted on public social media platforms, private Facebook groups, YouTube videos and far-right online talk shows.”
