Signs of Hope – A continuing series April 3, 2020

Gewerkschaftler suggested this recently:

I suggest this blog should have a regular (weekly) slot where people can post happenings at the personal or political level that gives them hope that we’re perhaps not going to hell in a handbasket as quickly as we thought. Or as the phlegmatic Germans put it “hope dies last”.

Any contributions this week?

Anyone else hear that the self-styled New IRA are considering announcing a cessation for the duration of the Covid crisis – following the lead of the ELN in Colombia? https://r.search.yahoo.com/_ylt=AwrP4lCCp4deDw4A8kcM34lQ;_ylu=X3oDMTByaW11dnNvBGNvbG8DaXIyBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzcg–/RV=2/RE=1585977346/RO=10/RU=https%3a%2f%2fwww.bbc.co.uk%2fnews%2fworld-latin-america-52090169/RK=2/RS=v0Vitm2nbOjeXBtY2fyOequsiXo-

The voices in my head are always interesting. That’s the only place I heard it, unfortunately.

A cessation of what exactly?They are not engaged in anything remotely resembling a campaign and their “political” arm suspended all Easter events long before the draconian anti virus measures were introduced.I think they were relieved to have an excuse to do so as the numbers attending would have been pathetic.

Yeah Roddy, there’s no stomach for them at all right now.

What’s more worrying is the rise of English nationalism stoked by a Tory party that willfully ignores the past so that they can once again perpetuate the mistakes and misery of the past to glorify party and country over all else.

Maybe a cessation in drug dealing due to travel restrictions?

I’ve a close relative in a town on the south coast of England who works in homelessness and drug addiction services. They tell me no drugs are coming down from London or other urban centres at the moment. The illegal market has taken a real hit.

“New York City will be providing free meals to anyone who needs food at public school sites on Friday.
The grab-and-go meals will be available to anyone who needs food including children and adults.
The city has 435 sites spread out around the five boroughs where people can get breakfast, lunch and dinner all to go, free of charge.”

Let’s hope the supply chains keep working;

“Food supply chains in developed economies are showing increased signs of strain as nationwide lockdowns designed to curb the spread of the coronavirus heap pressure on systems that had very little slack to begin with. The result is empty store shelves, and panicked buyers.
The transportation links that move food around the globe are being tested in unprecedented ways. Shipowners are struggling to change crews and move goods between ports. Airlines have grounded thousands of planes, slashing air freight capacity.”

“A growing scene for those who venture out into the streets of Manhattan these days is boarded up storefronts. From luxury retailers to small bars, establishments that have no idea when they are going to be allowed to reopen are putting up protection over their glass doors and windows.
The businesses have taken the unsightly measure in an effort to defend against the potential for civil unrest caused by the coronavirus and a lack of officers on the streets.”
