Same time, next year? May 30, 2020

Predictably Duran Duran in St. Anne’s Park, Dublin, was… ahem… postponed this week. It’s been rescheduled to Sunday 13th of June next year. And sensible that was, though given we were less than a fortnight out from the original gig perhaps a little late in the day. There’s a new event portal from Ticketmaster which has details of rescheduled gigs. I see a couple there already. Yes, for a start. And some slated for later this year, well, not sure they’ll happen. Horslips, late in the year? Might. Might not. I’ve heard that one major Irish promoter is already talking about focusing on Irish acts next year rather than international ones, which seems sensible.
Call me pessimistic, but I think it’ll be quite a few years before there’s any chance of the kind of gigs we were used to, given how long it would take to vaccinate/immunise the global population. Caution – necessary caution – will make any big events impractical. But I think our natural resourcefulness will kick in and we’ll develop alternative ways to entertain ourselves safely.

Certainly think that’s plausible rock roots re a long time but as you say alternatives will and are emerging

A musician friend points out that – apart from the dinosaurs of the music scene – nobody makes any money from album sales any more. Streaming has reduced royalties to fractions of cents. The only money to be made is ticket sales and merchandise, so where to now?

Even at that, it’s tough to make any money from gigging at the bottom. I’m always struck by how students I teach will fork out hundreds of pounds/ euros for festival tickets but will balk at a fiver for a pub gig.

I’ve had Ticketmaster in lieu of a refund tell me that two gigs Nick Cave and The Specials have been rescheduled for nearly a year to the day. I’m guessing there is no I’d rather have my money back option? A cursory glance at their website wasn’t helpful.

I figure we can kiss goodbye to refunds for the moment if the rescheduling thing is used. I’d three or four gigs lined up this year and still some for things scheduled late in the year which were bought eight or ten months ahead of time. Can’t see them happening tbh until next year soonest. But I do think it’s unfair if people want their money back now to deny them that.
