Internal opposition? July 30, 2020

Posted by guestposter in Uncategorized.

As noted by SonofStan:

Green Party TD Neasa Hourigan has resigned as party whip, but said she is not leaving the party, after voting against the Government twice on amendments to the Residential Tenancies Bill.

She said the matter is now for the parliamentary party to consider.

She’s the only one of the new crop of Greens i know anything about – any of the rest likely to follow?

WorldbyStorm - July 30, 2020

Wouldn’t think so to judge from matters so far.

Good on her. There’s no need for a 3 line whip on every single issue that comes to a vote. The Greens of all parties, with their history of distributed power, should respect that.

Excellent News!🙋‍♀️ Well done 👍 Neasa Hourigan TD Dublin Central.

Neasa Hourigan TD, Green Party Dublin Central, votes against FFFGGG Housing Bill – “Eviction due to sale is directly in conflict with Green Party policy and so I am unable to support this bill”
Hopefully a case of 1 Green deputy down, 11 to go.

There were 12 green bottles🍾 sitting 🪑 on the wall,
and if 1 green bottle 🍾should accidentally fall,
There were 11 green bottles 🍾….

“The Dublin Central TD voted against the Bill as a whole after 6pm, which could lead to her being stripped of the whip by her party.
Another Green Party TD abstained in the final vote.
There was criticism this week that the Bill was not discussed at the Cabinet sub-committee on housing, which only met today for the first time.” https://tomasoflatharta.wordpress.com/2020/07/30/congranulation-to-neasa-hourigan-td-green-party-dublin-central-she-votes-against-fffggg-coalition-residential-tenancies-bill/

Thanks Tomas.

Wasn’t she the only TD to sign up for the Just Transition Greens?

5. irishelectionliterature - July 30, 2020

I see Joe O’Brien abstained on some vote too.

WorldbyStorm - July 30, 2020

That must have been the other TD.

I’ve met Joe and believe he Is in politics to try to make the world a better place. People like him must be tortured by the choices involved over the last few weeks. I hope it’s him. But as a junior minister, it’s even more complex.

Hard to see either of them staying in the parliamentary party for long, which would leave the Government with a Dail majority of…1.

The convention in Ireland is that rebels lose the whip, and, given the various snafus over the past month, both Martin and Ryan would look very weak if they didn’t crack down on dissident Greens at this stage.

WorldbyStorm - July 30, 2020

As you rightly say, 1… bloody hell. This early in.
Time for the cohort of independents to step forward, near enough as one, to deliver their support. And so it goes.

It was obvious to everyone that going into government would destroy the Greens again, just this time it will be an internal fracture primarily. McHugh was one thing, but this is arguably bigger. That snowball is going to grow.

WorldbyStorm - July 31, 2020

I’d agree it certainly is bigger.

Willy O Dea has a ‘go’ at the soft punishment the Green party handed out to their errant TDs.
Willie is turning out to be only a lowly sniper and not the Field Marshal he considered himself to be when he was Minister for Defence.
