Dark academia November 1, 2020

Posted by guestposter in Uncategorized.

The description of where many of us who have or continue to work in third level have found ourselves? Not quite. From the people who brought you cottagecore, behold dark academia, an ‘aesthetic’ , that seems determined to combine Harry Potter, preppy and Giles from Buffy in one curious mix.

Dark academia is an aesthetic centered on higher education, writing, the arts, and classic Greek and Gothic architecture, as well as romantic longing and death. Like cottagecore, goblincore, and grandmacore, it gained popularity on the online platforms TikTok and Tumblr.

The shutdown of schools caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has been credited with the increased popularity of dark academia.

I’ll bet. The resident expert on all things TikTok is the person who introduced me to DA.

Does it sound elitist? Why yes, yes it does!

As to what it involves… well… check out the following…

I guess it’s…er… educationalish?

Brilliant. That’s it exactly 🙂

It just looks sort of autumnal to me. Which isn’t so bad, given the time of year. I’ve always been a fan of browns, as they don’t show the dirt as much as other colours and thus ease the burden of laundry. So thumbs up.

Tweed proliferates.

BTW didn’t Ian McCulloch wear a lot of autumnal colours as well as black?
