Not a great loser… November 24, 2020

Is he? Though as a friend of mine noted a week or two back, he wasn’t much of a great winner either.

“Resurfaced video of Trump pardoning Carrots the turkey has gone viral, as the president refuses to concede losing to President-elect Joe Biden….
In 2018, when two turkeys named “Peas” and “Carrots” were vying for the presidential pardon, Trump revealed that Peas had won the vote in “a fair and open election” — and he called out Carrots for refusing to accept the results.”

Money talks…

“Mr Trump has also faced increasing pushback from US business leaders, including in a letter on Monday signed by Larry Fink of BlackRock, David Solomon of Goldman Sachs and more than 160 other executives. The letter, organised by the non-profit Partnership for New York City, warned that delays to the transition threatened the US response to the coronavirus pandemic.
The Business Roundtable, a lobby group for many of the US’s largest companies, later welcomed the GSA announcement, saying it would give Mr Biden’s team “access to critical resources that are necessary to confront the pandemic, rebuild the US economy and address other pressing issues from day one.”

And Giuliani walks.

Really good article on the class/ethnicity factors in the election. Not cheerful reading though – just highlights the absolutely useless nature of the Democrats

This is something which made me cringe badly whenever I encountered liberal hand-wringing about a violent coup in the lead up to this election. A violent coup would almost certainly be very bad for business both of the big and the general variety so the ruling class was never going to allow that to happen (unless maybe it was very tight a la Bush vs. Gore).

WorldbyStorm - November 24, 2020

Yeah, a violent coup was entirely implausible. For a start the US military would be deeply unlikely to participate in same. Trump has to some degree built loyalty in the DHS, but… nothing to the extent he could use that as an armed militia. A political coup still very unlikely, but Republicans have tiptoed closer to the line on this one. A closer result, smaller margins, not difficult to see in future elections the legacy of the events of the last couple of weeks being played out in various dismal ways.

President-elect Joe Biden will appoint Jake Sullivan as his national security advisor.

“Sullivan is more given to the use of force than many in the Obama administration, he’s also shown a willingness to engage diplomatically with some of the toughest customers in the world….

“Hillary thinks he is the cat’s meow.”

“Biden’s incoming team helped shape some of the most militaristic policies of the Obama administration….
Biden comes with a long political career of supporting the wars of the United States and its allies, from the 2003 invasion of Iraq to Israel’s aggression against Palestinians to the protracted occupation of Afghanistan….
Antony Blinken — who will be nominated for Secretary of State, as the Biden-Harris transition team announced Monday — has rightfully attracted considerable criticism for a record of supporting wars and so-called humanitarian interventions. …
Jake Sullivan, set to be Biden’s National Security Advisor, went to work for Macro Advisory Partners in 2017. “Run by former British spy chiefs, Macro Advisory Partners has about 30 full-time staff and reported $37 million in revenue last year…
one third of Biden’s Pentagon transition team alone lists as their “most recent employment” think tanks, organizations or companies that are either funded by the weapons industry or are directly part of this industry.”

Rats and a sinking ship…

“Donald Trump continued to gravitate towards his new rightwing media allies at TV channels One America Network and Newsmax on Tuesday, even as heavyweight supporters Laura Ingraham, Tucker Carlson and Rush Limbaugh distanced themselves from the president’s attempts to overturn his election defeat by Joe Biden.”

According to the WSJ website, how many of the 100 most populous US counties did Trump win? Don’t look it up, guess!

“Biden’s an empty vessel. I don’t think he has any firm principles. He’s up against the DNC [Democratic National Committee], which runs the party and is basically the Wall Street wing…
“Despite Biden’s win, Trump won a huge victory,….
Trump is a skilled politician who understands the American mentality,…
Trump has managed to tap into poisonous currents that are right below the surface in American life, culture and history – to simply extract and magnify the poison. And that’s what he has been running on. White supremacy is a deep principle in American society and culture.” – Chomsky.

Chomsky is in his 90s. For some reason that’s a huge surprise. Still as sharp as ever he was.
