‘Both sides’… January 13, 2021

Too late to submit to the ‘Sunday Stupid Statement’ but Lucinda Creighton in the SBP while bemoaning the events in the last week in the US was quick to assert:

At both extremes of the political spectrum, groups and individuals have decided to reject the pillars of democracy – the police, the courts, and free and fair elections This is a phenomenon which has been enabled by politicians on both sides, with Democrats and Republicans turning a blind eye to violent extremist behaviour by their supporters.

Both sides – eh?

Many Democrats failed to condemn the violent actions by some Black Lives Matter and Antifa protesters over the summer months. Republicans stayed silent when right wing groups such as the Proud Boys engaged in violence and intimidation.Silence on both sides has denigrated American politics and demeaned both parties. Yet the silence of most Republican figures in relation to the words and actions of Donald Trump over the past few years has been most damaging of all. That complicity, more than anything, is what led to the attacks on Congress last week.

And:

Yet some good may come of it. Trump’s voters have supported him for many and varied reasons. Some fear the Democrats’ economic policy more than him, some fear the “progressive” agenda of the more radical members of the Democratic Party, some are traditional “law and order“ voters appalled by the BLM riots and ”defund the police“ campaigns.

Of course not a word about content or form. What were the protests associated with BLM about as distinct from those of the far-right? Where did BLM protests seek to disrupt democratic assemblies?

The massive protests after the killing of George Floyd were for the most part peaceful.
There is a huge difference between someone ripping off a tv set from Macy’s and a Trump-inspired fascist mob attacking the Capitol trying to halt the peaceful transfer of power and overturn the result of a democratic election with a record turnout held during a pandemic.
Conflating the two feeds into Trump’s Big Lie that the election was stolen.

I have a proposal for the CLR and for the whole, wide world. After 20th January, we do not mention his name, the chap who lost the US Presidential election. We ignore him, blank him. We speak not his name. Deny him the oxygen of publicity on which he thrives. Please.

They’ve been doing that in the US for a while already Joe. Pal of mine in Boston refers to him as “45”, the 45th President of the USA. It takes a while to get used to but it’s a good shorthand for treating him exactly as you suggest.

Ok. That’s not enough! I wasn’t clear in my proposal. I say ignore him and stop talking about him and what he says or does. Do not mention his name or mention him by any other name. Cancel him.

We’ve had five years where day in, day out, we’ve let him be the dominant topic of our conversations. Now is the time to stop that.

I’m kind of with you there banjo! I think I mentioned I avoided all the twitter stuff for four years because it seemed pointless. Now at the current point there’s a utility because of the centrality to events in the US. But in just a few short days I hope we can consign him to history.

Hmm, I do agree up to a point. I mean we can’t just pretend that what he represents has gone away obviously. But I’m with you on the cancelling. To be honest I had ignored him as much as I could for the past 4 years, but I’d also ignored Brexit from early on, and I’m currently ignoring the escalating but hopefully soon to stabilise public health situation and all things covid related, and as for the whole narrative around the mother and baby homes report I’m just completely blanking it. It’s all too much. I used to be able to engage with all of it, the wrongs of the world, the tragedies, the inequalities, the barbarism, but not now. I applaud those who continue to scrutinise, to analyse, to organise / educate / agitate, to keep going. It’s very necessary work. I’d like to cancel all the wrongs of the world, not just the big orange one.

“Both sides’ is an important stance to take for the professional lobbyist of today.
