Interesting episode, but what a shower… I like the claim they are “perfectly respectable” and “perfectly legitimate”. Protest too much? 🙂
That mid-nineties emphasis on EU immigration, and German people particularly, is interesting. I take it there were too many organic/biodynamic farms popping up in West Cork and Clare for their liking! It’s quite a different tenor of concern from the anti-asylum nonsense.

Isn’t it very typical of that mentality – any excuse is enough. And perhaps part of it was to seem less focused on race?

It was, they were an awful shower. As I mention in the episode they were given massive publicity by the media, with Late Late Show appearances and the like.
