Signs of Hope – A continuing series April 9, 2021

Gewerkschaftler suggested this recently:

I suggest this blog should have a regular (weekly) slot where people can post happenings at the personal or political level that gives them hope that we’re perhaps not going to hell in a handbasket as quickly as we thought. Or as the phlegmatic Germans put it “hope dies last”.

Any contributions this week?

I am not involved as I am not one but CATU (the tenants union) has been doing really good work across the city to raise people’s consciousness about conditions in the rental housing sectors. With the ABP rejection of co-living on the Hendron’s site this week, they’ve shown how we can organise effectively against shitty urban development in the service of capital.

” New York will offer payments of up to $15,600 to undocumented immigrants affected by the pandemic, in a sweeping move which could benefit nearly 300,000 people in the state.
The state dedicated a total of $2.1bn to an Excluded Worker Fund, which will make one-time payments to undocumented people who lost work during the coronavirus outbreak, which shut down New York City last spring.”

” This year’s state budget includes a $2.4 billion pot of emergency relief for New Yorkers struggling to make rent because of the coronavirus pandemic …
The $2.4 billion program …. provides eligible renters with financial help to cover upward of 12 months owed in back rent and utilities since last March as well as three future months of rent, regardless of immigration status. The program also gives renters a year of eviction protection, extending a moratorium that was set to expire in May.”

” New York City’s ultra-high earners will soon have to pay a top marginal income tax rate of nearly 52%, the highest personal income tax hit in the U.S. That means — in theory, at least — that some of the city’s wealthiest residents could end up giving more of their paychecks to federal, state and local governments than they keep for themselves…
“Historically, when you invest and raise revenue progressively for basic public services what we find is that you recover faster than when governments turn to austerity budgets,” said Rebecca Bailin, campaign manager for Invest in Our New York, an advocacy group pushing for higher taxes for the state’s wealthy. “You have seen that domestically and internationally.”

Condolences and apparently sympathies for ‘those’ in NI who found his death a loss (always pays to read to the end)

But MLD and Michele would never swear alliegance to HRH.The WP, PBP, SP, Cross Community Labour, and the rest have all stated at election time that they would take that oath.Even the IRSP at one stage were prepared to do it.

Ewi/Roddy… tongue was in cheek!

Its hard to know whats tongue in cheek .Apparently its OK for the establishment to hold a mass funeral for a Garda who produced a gun and god knows what happened next. However if Republicans hold a similar funeral for a man who died from cancer, its an outrage because it will lead to loyalists rioting 10 months later.

It was OK for Irish Gardai to gather after Detective Garda Colm Horkan ‘s death on 17/6/2020

It was OK for the English to gather for the funeral of Dame Vera Lynn after her death on 18/6/2020.

It wasn’t OK for the Irish to gather in Belfast after Bobby Storey’s death on 21/6/2020

Re HRH (deceased) – our local Waitrose has a poster at the bottom of the travelator with a pic of himself, expressing the deep condolences of all the staff. I don’t think they rustled it up between yesterday and today somehow.

” The BBC has set up a dedicated complaints page for viewers fed up with its blanket coverage of the death of Prince Philip.

“We’re receiving complaints about too much TV coverage of the death of HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh,” reads a statement on the BBC Complaints page, which invites disgruntled viewers to submit an email address to register a complaint….
Britons have not taken kindly to Friday night telly being sidelined for royal programming.”

They’ll be pissing against the wind complaining to the BBC.23k people signed a petition up here so far complaining about a vile shock jock who stirs up tensions here every morning. The BBC dismissed them in the most arrogant, patronising manner.
