Timely article from the Guardian on the issues with the Home Office:

Patel the offspring of a particularly nasty and anglophile section of Indian society, who then found ‘advancement’ as minor administrators in the empire, before finding their way to settling in the UK.

Bit unnecessary? The Home Sec can be a nasty piece of work all by herself within dragging her ethnic background into it.

Yeah, I think she is what she is. We don’t need to look at her background, ethnic, familial or whatever to see that she is not a good person in any context. One might hope that she would have taken some empathy and compassion from where her own family came from but clearly not. It’s on her. I’m also dubious about ascribing very broad brush sentiment onto groups when we know that there are numerous exceptions, and in fairness the sentiment that does exist is for a range of reasons, good bad and indifferent. People and groups have to navigate in difficult circumstances everywhere and at all times.

And just to add, anglophile is an interesting concept. I would consider myself culturally and in some political aspects (ie collective struggle etc) anglophile. No contradiction between that and republicanism whatsoever.

That’s a very depressing article. 2 things in particular are striking: that hardly any of this apparatus existed 20 years ago, and that it’s much more important not to piss off the Daily Mail than to do the just thing.

I was following this in tw*tter all day yesterday while teaching. One guy spent 8 hours under that van to prevent it moving. Inspiring stuff.

The guy lying under the Border Force/Immigration van to stop it moving was wearing an Anti-Fascist Action tee-shirt too.

Aamer Anwar on radio 4 yesterday didn’t back down when the presenter asked if UK immigration law should apply in Scotland, even when he said “but Scotland voted to stay in he UK and accept those laws”.

I used to live around the corner from Kenmure St when I first moved to Glasgow. This part of Glasgow is a real patchwork of districts in terms of class and ethnicity. Pollokshields East, where Kenmure St is located, is working class/lower middle class area of what are called tenaments in Glasgow ( large Victorian houses broken into multiple flats) whose residents are mainly white Scottish or Pakistani Scottish. Walk 5 minutes west and you’re in Pollokshields West, an area of grand mansions traditionally inhabited by white Scottish bourgeois but more recently joined by wealthy Pakistani Scots.

But walk around 5 minutes the opposite direction and you’re in Govanhill, one of the poorest districts in Scotland. In the early 20th century, it’s population was mostly made up of Irish and Jewish workers – that’s changed though there are still traces of the past with an elderly population of Irish descent, some Celtic pubs, and a community hall where Glasgow’s Conradh na Gaeilge branch meet. Before the pandemic a group of Jewish anarchists tried to set up a cultural centre in a former synagogue with the emphasis on Yiddish culture but I don’t think it got off the ground. Many of Govanhill’s residents today are more recent immigrants, the largest of which are Turkish Kurds and Roma people from Slovakia. The housing situation there is a real problem with slum landlords exploiting the new immigrants. There are occasional tensions but attempts by the far right to exploit them have utterly failed – Nazi Jayda Fransen, who was properly put in her box by Nicola Sturgeon in a street “confrontation” during the recent election, got a grand total of 46 votes in the constituency that covers this area.

Further south is the trendy Shawlands area, mainly white Scottish middle class though also more mixed ethnically than it used to be.

It’s a complex picture in terms of class and ethnicity but, while not the multicultural idyl that some would claim, it’s far from the closed ghettos that the far right and their media fans portray.
