Tape fan June 12, 2021

Mentioned in comments last week that I watching the not bad 1971 music/social history documentary on Apple TV+ the other day – based on David Hepworth’s book – and largely enjoying it, though also coming to the firm conclusion that John Lennon sounded remarkably like a proto-Bono during that period. One very clever feature is that while people are interviewed in the contemporary period, all the footage dates from that period. It’s an insight into a time that I have barely any recollection of. I could quibble with the idea that 1971 was the year music changed everything. Any year from then and arguably well into the decade and once again in the early 1990s could have that claim, and actually it’s likely an unsupportable claim in any case. I’m not entirely taken with just how mainstream the selection of those making music, at least in the first episode was.

Anyhow there’s reference to the Nixon tapes. And indeed a rather chilling excerpt from same.
