Michael Taft has covered this issue in greater detail than the previous post on here on the CLR. Very well worth a read. Some great points, not least – quoting Brian Hayes no less(!) – that Bank Holidays (capitalised, not capitalised, anyone know?) can “generate economic activity and jobs” through festivals and so on.

According to the Oxford dictionary, it takes lower case for the general term. They capitalise the term ‘Bank Holiday Monday’ (why, I don’t know — it’s not a proper noun).

The Guardian Style Guide gives lowercase initials in ‘bank holiday Monday’. The BBC style says lowercase unless referring to a specific one such as the Spring Bank Holiday. UCC days lower case.

I go with UCC and the Guardian.
